I remember the 9-year-old me, standing in front of a big mirror in my parent's bedroom, ruler in hand, gibbering away like a tiny, would-be teacher. Who knew that 9 years later, I'd be standing in front of a real class of preprimary school learners, teaching them to read and write effortlessly?

My story from Mirror talks to impact

Immediately after my high school, I had the opportunity to teach at a community primary school in my neighbourhood with the determination to make a lasting impact. Little did I know that my approach to teaching would lead to unprecedented success, earning me the title of Best Teacher not once, but for five years.

How it happened?

Because I've always believed that every learner has his or her unique potential, so I categorized them into three groups: the Most Smart, Average Learners, and Below the Line. This intentional grouping allowed me to tailor my teaching methods to meet the distinct needs of each group.

For the Most Smart learners, I provided challenging materials and projects that stimulated their intellect and encouraged them to retain their brilliance. I initiated a culture of critical thinking and creativity empowering them to become their best and beyond.

The Average Learners, however, whom I affectionately called the 'Middle Belt,' received one-on-one support from me to bridge the gap between their abilities and their full potential. Through personalized attention, skill-building exercises, and constructive feedback, I groomed them to attain the first category, and many successfully leaped.

As for the Below the Line learners, I implemented specialized interventions to address knowledge gaps and build foundational skills. With patience, empathy, and adaptability, I helped them gain confidence, develop a growth mindset, and progress at their own pace.

After the impact I had on my students, do you think I would ever back away from teaching?

No way!

That experience only fueled my passion for teaching, but teaching vulnerable learners with the goal of filling the gap created by educational inequalities, that... truly drives me.

My approach not only yielded applaudable academic results but also instilled a love for books and exceptional creativity in my students. The awards received were a testament to the power of compassion I extended to those innocent ones and their boundless, hidden potential.

22 years later, the founder of the school I taught for 10 years reached out to me with heartwarming news, shared the immense joy of parents to this day, and the outstanding achievements of my charming learners, who are now excels in their various pursuits.

One of the most enjoyable experiences I've had in graduate school was seeing the beam of understanding in my peers' eyes whenever I tailored my teaching to meet their unique needs and explained a concept they had previously struggled to understand. I had the opportunity to volunteer as a teaching support in my department at the Nigerian Institute of Journalism in Ogba, Lagos State, from February 2023 to March 2024. The moments of watching complex concepts make sense and seeing confidence grow made every semester unforgettable.

While at Olabisi Onabanjo University, I worked one-on-one with my students in my department who struggled to understand the fundamentals of English speech sounds, particularly the identification of phonetic symbols and their correct articulations. I also had the opportunity to lead small groups of students from other departments who faced similar challenges in the same course.

Teenage & Youth Mentorship

Since January 2021, I have embarked on a transformative journey with the teenagers and youth at my local church, guiding, empowering, and supporting them as they strive for academic excellence and spiritual and personal growth, despite their diverse experiential backgrounds. At our weekly meetings, I help these resilient young individuals unlock their potential and overcome adversity. Witnessing their growth and transformation year after year brings immense joy to my heart and puts a smile on my face.

Whenever I have the opportunity to support initiatives dedicated to empowering young people. I often support as a facilitator and guide as a counsellor to young participants during their counselling sessions.

Young Christian Women Forum

I have been passionate about the well-being of women and their personal growth, so I launched an online community, "Choose and Walk Right", during the coronavirus lockdown to uplift and equip young women navigating the challenges of career development amidst marital responsibilities. By providing a safe space for connection, encouragement, and skill-building, I have enabled these remarkable women to thrive and reach new heights in their personal and professional journeys.

Outside the Choose Right and Walk Right community, I also support another community of moms, the "MomChat Community". I manage the community's social media pages, design fliers, initiate and coordinate evening prayer meetings and Bible study daily, and record and publish broadcasted sessions on the community media networks – Spotify and YouTube.
